Education

I SKCON is an educational institution. As such, we need different types of education at different stages of our lives. We need to educate our children, who are born to practicing members, in Krishna consciousness, we need to provide education and training to train future leaders for our movement. We need to train people who are eager to join our movement. At present, at ISKCON Mayapur we have three educational institutions to our children catering to their differing propensities and interests, three institutions to train adult devotees and one recruitment and training program for new bhaktas. Each of these institutions contains appropriately qualified and dedicated devotee teachers and trainers.

Gita Study Course

This department was started in 1994 under the direction of Bhakti Purusottama Maharaja. The devotees in this department develop and conduct Krishna conscious courses through correspondence. At present two correspondence study programs, Gita Study Course and Bhagavata Study Course are in operation. Govardhan Gopal Prabhu, a high school teacher, helped prepare the course material.

Students can partake of this course at two levels

  • Level 1 – Students learn a summary of Bhagavad-gita As It Is. They write 4 examinations over a period of 6 months. The 18 chapters of the Bhagavad-gita are covered in three exams, each comprising six chapters. However all of the 18 chapters are covered at once in a final exam.
  • Level 2 – The students study Bhagavad-gita As It Is, Teachings of Queen Kunti and The Nectar of Instruction in detail. They write 4 examinations over a period of 1 year to complete this level successfully.

Since the inception of this Gita study course in 1994, 6450 students have enrolled into Level 1. Of these, 1360 students have successfully completed the course and 724 of these successful students entered Level 2. Out of them, 356 completed it successfully. And out of those who have completed both grade 1 and grade 2, 183 students have joined the Bhagavata Study Course.

Until now, around 54 students who have taken up the Gita Study Course are initiated and strictly practicing Krsna consciousness, chanting 16 rounds of Hare Krishna Maha Mantra and following the 4 regulative principles. All these students are residents of different cities of West Bengal.

Bhagavata Study Course

In 2004 the Bhagavata Study Course was started where students are taught the first four Cantos of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. This course is taught in 2 parts and has 16 exams. An annual gathering of students is conducted to inspire them to take up the practices of Krishna consciousness. For the annual gathering at 2006, about 1400 students were invited.

Future plans

This department also wants to conduct one week courses on the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita and conduct them personally in important cities of West Bengal. It also plans to introduce correspondence courses through the Internet.

There are 11 devotees serving in the department.

So we are going to open a big center in Mayapur where this education will be internationally imparted. Students from all parts of the world will go there to take education in this important subject.” The Mayapur Institute aims to fulfill this desire of Srila Prabhupada by establishing Mayapur as a center for higher education and training.

New Bhakta Training and Recruitment Center

Recruitment and training of new Bhaktas was established in 1978 with 3 devotees serving. Since then about 100 young men are being trained in this department every year as they join the temple. For about two months, they are systematically educated and trained in different aspects of devotional service. Some of these devotees are also sent to other ISKCON centers to perform services. The training is provided to devotees who know Bengali, Hindi and English, and is imparted under the supervision and counsel of a veteran senior brahmachari Murari Gupta Prabhu. This department has published a new bhakta training book in Bengali and wants to publish in other languages like Hindi, Oriya and English.
