Gundica Marjana

2

Gundica marjana means cleaning of the temple Gundica, which is non-different to Vrindavan. On the day prior to the Ratha yatra festival, the temple is cleansed and decorated nicely to welcome the Lord of the Universe the next day. This practice is going on in Puri since the time of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. The Chaitanya – Bhagavata beautifully describes of how Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu cleansed the temple along with his devotees. Even today in Puri this festival is observed. Many devotees come together and sweep and wash the temple.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu ordered the devotees to sweep and wash the temple repeatedly for 4 times to ensure the temple was perfectly clean. Similarly if we want the Lord to enter and reside in our hearts, our hearts should also be clean. This is what Mahaprabhu meant by telling the devotees to clean nicely. This stage is called Anartha –nivritti. Only when our heart is cleansed we will get the taste for the Lord’s names. Mahaprabhu made the devotees always sing the Holy names while cleaning the temple. Our hearts cannot be cleansed by any other way other than chanting the Holy names of the Lord. Only the Holy name has the power to make our hearts clean.
