S ri Jahnu muni resided in Navadvipa. The Island is named after him as Jahnu dvip. When, Bhagirath from the ikswaku dynasty brought Ganga to earthly planet by great penance to deliver his ancestors he passed by Jahnu muni’s ashram in Navadvipa. Ganga Devi who was following Bhagirath with great force washed away the sage’s hut. Jahnu muni in great anger swallowed the entire Ganga. Bhagirath realizing that Ganga was not following him came back and begged Jahnu muni to release her. Jahnu muni the released her from his ear. Therefore, Ganga is also known as Jahnavi, daughter of Jahnu muni. The day he released her is Jahnu saptami.
When Ganga Devi married Shantanu in the Kuru dynasty she gave birth to Bhishma. Bhishma dev, came to Navadwipa to study under the guidance of his grandfather Jahnu muni. Jahnu muni who knew about the glories of Navadwip dham and had got the darshan of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, told Bhishma about Mahaprabhu.
When Bhishma dev was in the death bed in Kurukshetra he composed the Vishnu sahasra nama where he mentions about Mahaprabhu – Suvarna varna hemango, varango chandana hrdi.
