All the incarnations of Sri Krsna that appeared in different yugas eternally reside here, in Navadvipa Dham and all the holy places in the universe also reside in Navadvipa. The island of Modaruma is non-different from Ayodhya dham. Lord Ramchandra along with Sita Devi and Lakshman came here during His exile.

Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur describes in his Navadvip bhava Taranga –

‘Wandering and wandering about, observing the glory of the forest, I will suddenly behold the cottage of Lord Sri Rama. Then will I see Rama Himself, the color of nava durva dala fresh durva grass, dressed like a brahmacari and sitting in one place along with Lakshmana and Sita. Seeing Lord Ramachandra’s beautiful form within that forest, I will swoon on the spot. My entire body overwhelmed with ecstatic love, I will remain stunned and speechless as I fill both my eyes that are heartily drinking the beauty of His form. Being merciful, Laksmana will come forward slowly, set down some fruit and place his feet upon my head. He will say, “My dear child, please eat this fruit. Since we are living here in the forest, this is all we have to offer our guests. Just as he says this, the vision of this pastime will dissolve. Weeping and weeping, I will eat at the fruit. Oh, will I ever again see the figure of Rama, green as fresh durva grass? In my heart, I will meditate on that inconceivably beautiful form.’

Under a huge banyan tree Sri Ramachandra, Sita Devi and Lakshmana lived in a cottage. Seeing the effulgence of this place Sri Rama smiled feeling great joy in His heart. Sita Devi seeing this asked the Lord what was the reason for his happiness. The Lord then revealed to her the confidential topic of Gauranga. He explained to Sita Devi that in the Kali Yuga, He will appear in the golden yellow form of Gauranga and enjoy the vidya rasa or mellow of education. And then, leaving His mother and wife take sannyas and proceed to Puri preaching Love of God. Sri Sita Devi then asked the Lord why should he marry and leave his family to take sannyasa. What happiness He got by making his devotees suffer. The Lord then revealed the mellow and happiness achieved in the vipralambha Bhava mellow of separation.

Then Sita Devi and Lakshmana were eager to see that Golden form of the Lord. Then Ramachandra displayed the form of Gauranga. Seeing this both Sita and Lakshmana could not control their happiness. As Rama, Lakshmana and Sita experienced happiness under the banyan tree, this Island is known as Moda-Happiness and Druma – Banyan Tree Modadrumadvipa.

The associates of the Lord in the Rama Lila also appeared in the Kali yuga to take part in Gaura Lila. Sri Sita Devi appeared as Visnupriya and married Lord Gauranga. After He took sannyasa she worshipped his golden form deity, which we can still see. Guhaka raja who was a tribal king and friend of Lord Rama appeared as Sadanada vipra. He was a great devotee of Lord Rama. He went to visit Jagannath Mishra’s house and saw that many demigods had also come there in disguise to see baby Gauranga. Seeing this Sadananda understood that Gauranga was no ordinary child. After that he went to his house and meditated on Ramachandra and saw in the altar instead of Rama, Gauranga Mahaprabhu was sitting and the demigods including Brahma were worshipping Him. thus, he understood that Mhaprabhu was non-other than His Rama.

Sri Hanuman the great devotee of Lord Rama also appeared in Gaura Lila as Murari Gupta a physician. His house is between Chaitanya Matha and Srivasa Angana. Lord Gauranga as a child performed many pastimes with him.

Lord Caitanya once tested Murari Gupta’s attachment to his worshipable Lord Ramacandra. Lord Gaurasundara preached to Murari about the supreme sweetness and position of Vrajendra-kumara (Krishna): “Murari, just worship Krishna and take shelter of Him. Nothing but His service can satisfy the mind.” Although Murari Gupta became somewhat inclined toward Sri Krishna, the thought of losing Lord Ramacandra’s association devastated him. That night he prayed to Lord Rama to take his life. He asked for this because he couldn’t stop serving Rama, nor could he defy Sri Caitanya’s request.

After crying all night Murari approached Lord Caitanya and said: “What should I do? I’ve sold my head to the lotus feet of Lord Ramacandra. But if I break Your order to worship Lord Sri Krishna, then what can I do?”

Smiling, Sri Gaura Raya replied, “All glories to Murari Gupta! You’re so fixed in your worship that even My request couldn’t turn your mind. This is exactly the type of love and affection the servitor must have for the lotus feet of the Lord. Even if the Lord wants separation, a devotee cannot abandon the shelter of His lotus feet. Just to test your firm faith in your Lord I repeatedly asked you to change your worship from Lord Rama to Lord Krishna.”

Congratulating Murari Gupta, the Lord continued, “You are the incarnation of Hanuman, the eternal servant of Lord Rama. Therefore, why should you give up your worship of Lord Rama?”

At another time, Lord Caitanya showed His form as Lord Ramacandra with Janaki, Laksmana, and a host of monkeys reciting hymns and prayers. Seeing himself amongst those monkeys in his original form as Hanuman, Murari Gupta fainted. In Katva, when Lord Caitanya took sannyasa Murari stood by weeping like a child. And when Sriman Mahaprabhu moved to Jagannatha Puri, Murari and his wife would come every year to relish the Lord’s company.

Since he was born in a dynasty of AyurVedic doctors Murari Gupta practiced medicine. But his practice was unique in that he cured his patient’s physical ailments and also freed them from the disease of material existence. He wrote the first biography of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, an important Sanskrit work entitled Sri Caitanya Carita Mahakavya.
